It’s interesting that asteroid 163348 (2002 NN4), which is between 150-300m in length, was discovered 18 years ago, arriving in an expected path. They aren’t particularly worrying. What is worrying is something like Oumuamua, which was between 100m and 1 kilometre long and had passed within earths orbit already, went within mercury’s orbit, and was on it’s way out back past earths orbit within 1 month of it being first discovered. How many of these objects are around? Nobody knows as astronomers are only really starting to look for them.
Human intelligence has probably been at our current level for 300,000 years. Although the first stone tools have been discovered dating back to at least 700,000-950,000 years ago. We have history of maybe 10,000. I’ve always wondered what happened to the other 96.6% of the time, possibly up to 98% if you include Neanderthals and Denisovans, and 99% for stone tools. Just doing nothing, as the unproven assumption is that they were just itinerant primitives, grubbing roots, little more than animals, but they had religion, art, communities, travelled great distances, and were the originators of most of the grains we eat. But there have now been found incursions that date sapiens to 10,000 years before the accepted figures, with some supporting evidence for constant and 60,000 years and 10,000 years incursions before that, but died out, so it’s not a simple replacement principle that seems to be happening, things changing or happening that meant the theorised incursions failed. The interbreeding that happened at such times suggests that they weren’t just simply ‘replaced’ by a superior race, but that gene lines and characteristics were simply bred out by changing environments.
One oddity that has never been explained are the ‘red ochre’ burials, usually in a shallow area and river valleys, the ‘Red Lady of Paviland,’ a skeleton dyed in red ochre, now believed to be that of a young male was found in the Goat’s Hole Cave on the Gower Peninsula, South Wales and dates from about 33,000 years ago, but there the cave had been occupied from early times, possibly from as far back as 160,000 years ago and modern humans maybe occupying it around 43,000 years ago. This and other similar burials around europe is so similar to ones found in North America that its likely that similar people with similar beliefs migrated from Europe, possibly across the land bridge between Siberia and Alaska that existed between 45,000-12,000BC, and at the end around the time of the flooding of Doggerland. It suggests that the distant northern climes were not ‘barren ice wastelands’ as we find them now, but easily traversable grasslands and forests. This in itself doesn’t bode well for the ice caps, sea levels, coast lines and low lying cities, and earth’s more equatorially placed areas, requiring another necessary northerly migration in the future.
6,000 years ago our ancestors were moving giant blocks and creating constructions that would be a problem for most modern engineers. People are now only discovering that some of the chambers were probably used for astronomy around that time. Think who in your local community could do it now with the society we have.
If you go back to the time the dinosaurs were on the planet the atlantic was 1,000 miles narrower with currents going between 3,000 miles rather than 4,000 and when they first arrived the atlantic was probably just a wide river in a rift valley, not a sea or ocean.
If you trace back the civilizations of the world there is nothing really before 10,000 years ago worth mentioning, then somebody flipped a switch, and simultaneously within 3,000 years all around the world, civilizations started up after doing nothing for hundreds of thousands, possibly up to a million years. It was about the same time as all the megafauna seemed to have disappeared. My view is that they’ve simply been erased by events, not non-existent. Solar Flares, Asteroids, disease, climate change, super volcanoes, polar change, advanced or computer warfare; they are all candidates, perm any 2 from 7 for a bus ticket back to the stone age.
There seems to have been periodic disasters every few thousand years in the past, probably a very large one around 12,000 years ago, a major one about 2360BC where thriving communities in Europe, Asia and the Americas packed up, buried their monuments and suddenly moved on, another 540AD, another 850AD another around 1054AD, another in about 1303, and an unusually cool period between between 1440 and 1880. There seems to be an average of major cooling effects about every 1500 years after peaks of good or hotter weather. Asteroids, volcanoes, supernovae, all have shown a presence, few being pinned down as an exclusive cause, but many being seen as contributory factor. Tambora erupted in 1815 and had a cooling effect, but it was happening 7 years before, probably from a completely unknown eruption many times the size in 1808. That it was from a completely unknown source is very unusual considering the size the eruption must have been, so it’s likely that it was seen, but under-recorded as fairly insignificant. If you look at the Pacific gyre and the winds that go around it, running northwards at that time of year, records in Lima and Bogota suggest the volcano Putana in Chile is a good suspect. It was observed and said to have erupted around that time, being south of the two records, so it may have in fact been much larger and significant than recorded. The oddity that the sulphur mined or dug there is of an unusually high quality suggests that this volcano may be unusual, and the temperature differential in it’s structure may be more acute, lending it to more violent outbursts. Some of the biggest earthquakes are felt in Chile, the area being more sparse in populations than similar areas in the Norther Hemisphere.
Ahmet Muhiddin Piri or as we know him as Piri Reis (Captain Piri) was an Ottoman cartographer and navigator who compiled a set of navigation maps in a book he called Kitab-ı Bahriye (The Book of Navigation.) about in 1513. He produced it from a lot of unknown sources, but probably from the same one as Juan de la Cosa in about 1500.
Both set of maps detail north America, but some of Piri’s maps also include some of south America and Antarctica. The Antarctic area shows coastlines that match them underneath the ice, so it is likely that at some point the origin of them had mapped the coat prior to the ice covering them. This was unlikely to be later than about 12,000 years ago.
Although at one point he became a privateer it’s likely that Piri himself never left the main area around the Mediterranean, so the source his maps were from other unknown people’s versions that have not been discovered since.
Cristóbal Colón or Christopher Columbus reached the Bahamas in 1492 and later got as far as Panama in about 1502, the continent of Antarctica not being discovered until 1820. Peru and Chile weren’t invaded, explored or mapped by the Spanish until 20 years later than the Piri map and even longer for Cosa.
Al-Masudi in about 954 produced a circular map of the world that although some proportions are incorrect is quite an accurate representation of a globe of the world.
We know that Vikings had found North America 800 years prior to Columbus, but there is no evidence they travelled very far south.
The sources have never been discovered, but it tends to suggest two possibilities, one, that there were sea faring civilisations that had mapped those areas around and prior to 12,000 years ago, only a small amount of information coming forward, or that unknown people visited the area and were advanced enough to work out where the land was under the ice.
There is the possibility in that sea travel was much more extensive than imagined 12,000 years ago and what was the large island named Atlantis may be what is under the Antarctic, a sudden shift in polar regions covering it quickly being submerged under the glaciers and ice, waiting for a similar event or global warming to uncover it again. Myth has this habit of being totally dismissed as fiction then subsequent discoveries finding some truth in them, but not necessarily in perfect line with the stories, a lot of history taught in schools and universities themselves being as much as 80% fictional, totally tailored by the current beliefs of the teachers and lecturers and the society they find themselves in, and apart from general ideas about specific multi verified and recorded major events, not happening in the way portrayed.
One thing is very likely though. We do not have history before around 12,000 years ago, just fossil type records of humans ability past this time that seemed to be equivalent of ours today. The technology is different, none of it surviving, but the physical and mental abilities would be that of if you transplanted a human back to then we would be able to use our skills then, or if a person of the past was transported to now, they would have no trouble fitting in. I would say that at least 80,000 years is missing, possibly up to 300,000 or more.
One problem with history is the assumption that because something hasn’t been found it didn’t exist. So the assumption is that because there is no recorded history before about 12,000 years ago, there is no history. Nothing happened, and all the people were just grubbing around for roots and hunting wild animals, simple hunter gatherers all that time. But, anomalies and items that have been found that suggests unknown culture was there. Regarded as out of time quirks that can be safely ignored. If you found a 12,000 year old TV, it would just be such a quirk, the importance of finding it not regarded important in the scheme of things, instead of the push for a massive re-think and ‘what the heck happened.’ People have become too safe in their sure knowledge of events that were probably from biased and warped perspectives in the first place.
One thing that may be an easy and simple reason for disappearing civilisations is the change in environment, through loss of habitats and disease. We are currently seeing the effects of a disease in covid that has affected our modern mobile civilisation in a detrimental way, but this is with vaccines and rigid controls in society. Imagine diseases that had little such control and you could quite easily envisage a ‘civilisation killer’ form. Covid could still cause the breakdown of civilisation due to collapse of inflexible and non-resilient systems and attacks on its stability by such things as the Ukraine war, other countries taking advantage of this instability to make things worse, a statistical combination of something like climate change, a massive solar flare or an asteroid putting the finishing touches or a major push in a terminal direction for most of the worlds societies. In a highly unstable and volatile world where governments superficial corrections are all that is available, this could easily happen.
Climate change is happening. Unless it can be averted, which is in great doubt, there being also doubts it can be even slowed, there will be a push northwards and southwards with a strain on all civilisations in the path of that movement. It’s unlikely that the societies can survive in the current form they are, so the current level will be unsustainable. If ice caps are not the norm for the world, people illogically assuming that what they currently see and have is the only correct form, then we may find Antarctica becomes a major power in its own right. I still think it highly likely that we will discover evidence of lost civilisations there in the future if the current societies continue. They may collapse completely in the shift and only discover this in a couple of thousand years time, if at all, reverting to barbarism and decay back to iron age level living in the intervening period, with all the advances lost in the transition.
At the moment no government seems to be planning for this possibility/probability, using up resources up at a faster rate and causing more overall pollution to save resources and cause less pollution. A strategy needs to be formed, not just reaction to public opinion and continuing unsustainable practices, applying high-tech cosmetic and superficial fixes to a substantial problem. The view is that ‘we can keep all we have, do what we want and live the current lifestyles how we want, and there will be no price to pay,’ but much of the world is living a life that is not capable in industrial standards. ‘Eat, drink and be merry as our descendants will pay.’
The chart below details a list of the known civilisations of the past. To try and get the picture in I have compressed the time before 10,000BC into an area 1/50th of it’s actual size, so the text ‘Missing Human History’ should be 50 times as wide as shown. Most historians claim there was no or little history then, just as discovered massive monuments and structures that modern society with heavy lifting and processing equipment would have major problems producing, were made by simple hunter gatherer societies with no technical sophistication.
Modern society considers this missing area as an irrelevance, but it’s likely that this will be the same view in 100,000 years time when the society at that point may not be aware of our current societies existence. ’21st century man,’ 100th century experts consider it ‘a hunter gatherer society, but a few weirdo’s think they may have had more complicated things like hand ploughs.’
