Large Reserves of Oil Found in British Antarctic Territory

There has been a recent discovery of a large oil reserve in the British Antarctic Territory by Russian scientists or ‘Resource Investigators,’ maybe equal to 50 times the size of the deposits in the North Sea. Although it may appear so, this is not good news.

The area is currently covered by the Antarctic Treaty System was generated in 1959 and signed by 12 signatories, coming into force in 1961, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States, having now 58 countries party to it.
There are around 55 units currently active there and the base for the organisation which controls it, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has tried to keep Antartica free of commercial or territorial exploitation, even the tiny amounts of personal human waste being carefully monitored and controlled. The way the world is going though this may be over soon.

From 1946-1947 the US carried out a plan called Operation Highjump, with a large military force sent to Antarctica, comprising 13 ships and ~4,700 men in an attempt to sequester the area for itself, but proved too difficult at the time.

There are no indigenous people of the Antarctic to displace, just scientific missions there by agreement, and no forces to defend it. In the past few years many countries have had open expansion plans and threatening world security, mainly to secure resources or gain control of them for themselves by any means, the main three having no regard for agreements, treaties, or long standing laws and regulations, in most cases just ignoring them completely, plus with the threat of climate warming and unlikely to stop doing this, maybe at some time losing the poles completely, so we will likely have a new unpopulated land mass with likely large resources as can be seen from local discoveries, organisations like the UN just standing by and impotently watching with many present day events, NATO in danger of breaking up or falling apart, so it’s likely that similar to space, there will be military moves to dominate or monopolise it.
